What We Do

Mission

To unite USAFA Cadets past and present to combat sexual assault, sexual harassment and victim/survivor abuse at USAFA.
What We Do
Zoomies Against Sexual Assault (ZASA) is a USAFA Association of Graduates (AOG) Affinity Group that is open to all cadets, former cadets (alumni and graduates), as well as families and friends of USAFA. Our goals are three-fold:
  • Reduce sexual assault/sexual harassment and victim/survivor abuse at USAFA
  • Ensure appropriate post trauma care and support to victims
  • Build a bridge between USAFA and those who have lost faith in the institution and it's leadership

In order to accomplish our goals ZASA members:
  • Support USAFA sexual assault and sexual harassment prevention programs
  • Provide information, resources and support to survivors
  • Publish and share facts with the AOG, parents’ groups, cadets and future cadet candidates
  • Attend all USAFA Board of Visitors meetings
  • Meet regularly with USAFA Senior Leadership

Advocate

ZASA advocates for Sexual Assault Survivor issues in several ways. We attend and engage the Board of Visitors, advocates for policies in Washington DC, supports the USAFA SARC office where we can, and engages USAF and USAFA leadership to advocate for Sexual Assault prevention programs and policies. For example, ZASA was pivotal in the passing of the "Safe to Report" Act, which has proven to increase formal reports.

Survivor Support

ZASA provides information on where help is available to ensure every USAFA victim of sexual assault/sexual harassment is able to receive appropriate care and support. As a group we give the survivor an opportunity to share their experience in a safe place. (We are not professional counselors and do not provide counseling services.) We hope to restore trust in the USAFA sexual assault prevention, investigation and prosecution system by having a ZASA member attend all sexual assault and related court martials at USAFA.

Prevention

Our members support current USAFA Prevention programs by attending the courses and providing feedback to the program developers. Our group shares take away information with the AOG, parents’ groups, and future cadet candidates. In our effort to reduce sexual assault/sexual harassment, ZASA explores research in prevention science and is interested in refining the admissions process to identify best practices to protect current and future cadets.

Outreach

ZASA manages an active webpage to provide facts, documentation and resources. We participate in the AOG as an Affinity Group that is open to all cadets, former cadets (alumni and graduates), as well as families and friends of USAFA. Our goal is to build a bridge between USAFA and those who have lost faith in the institution and leadership. One means is by educating our members about the crisis of sexual assault/sexual harassment and victim/survivor abuse/retaliation at USAFA.

Continuity

ZASA provides an uninterrupted focus on reducing sexual assault/sexual harassment despite frequent changeover in USAFA senior leadership. We do this by meeting with USAFA senior leadership multiple times a year, attending every USAFA Board of Visitors meeting and participating in DoD and Service Academy Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Efforts.
