2023 Summit

ZASA's First Inaugural Summit

This past April, ZASA held their first Summit recognizing their first 5 years of existence, the progress we've made as an organization and community, and the progress we must continue push for in the next 5 years.

Amongst the events during our summit was the Community Awareness Luncheon, titled "Falcons for Change - Uniting the Community to END Sexual Assault at USAFA." The event brought together various USAFA stakeholders including Teal Ropes (a cadet organization focused on supporting survivors from within the cadet wing), cadet leaders, USAFA leaders, USAFA alumni, Sponsor Families, and ZASA members to build awareness of the magnitude of the sexual assault crisis, including how sexual assault affects USAFA, its total community, and the future of war-fighting.

Highlights from the Summit

The First 5 Years

Kate Smith, ZASA's Chief Financial Officer, summarizes how we formed and what we've done in the first five years of existence.

Leisa Meyer

Dr. Leisa Meyer, a ZASA Board Member and Professor in History, American Studies and Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies at William & Mary speaks to Sexual Assault and Military Culture.

SAPR Talk

Morgan Hildebrand, the Deputy of Integrated Prevention and Response at USAFA speaks to USAFA's new Integrated Prevention & Response as recommended by an Air Force commission.

The Next Five Years

Gretchen Cook, President of ZASA, and Kristen Vance, ZASA's newest board member, talk to the approach of our next five years.

So What Comes Next?

This event allowed us to make connections with cadets, sponsor parent groups, AOG affiliates, and Grads active in the USAFA community. We have gained 36 members since the summit and are taking volunteers for events such as supporting survivors at GCMs, representing ZASA at USAFA events, participating in sub-committees for particular focuses, and even facilitating conferences/summits in the future.

In the summer months, ZASA board members will be fleshing out our new FEARLESS campaign and will include those results in our fall newsletter and on the website.

In the meantime, there are several vital, open positions on the board that need to be filled:
  • Research Director: Responsible for reading and summarizing Sexual Assault-related reports released by the DOD and AF
  • Deputy Director: Responsible for assisting the President in her duties to include high-level conversations, managing partnerships with supporting groups and strategic communications, and organizing events.
  • Outreach roles: These positions will help the Communications Director with Social Media postings, the quarterly newsletter, mass email communications, and webmaster duties. A volunteer may choose to help with all or some of these duties depending on interest.
If you are interested in any of these roles and helping ZASA forge forward for the next 5 years, please reach out to zasa.usafa@gmail.com.
If you need support now call the DoD Safe Helpline (877) 995-5247 or 911. For other resources, see our Resources page.
